[22 Jun 2010|05:15pm]

The president of Southeastern Louisiana University has decided that he is going to eliminate the French program.

Here is my letter to himCollapse )

Here is a petition I made. I don't necessarily think it will do much, but hopefully it will get their attention and let them know that there are people out there who care about this.

Here is an article from Louisiana's newspaper, The Advocate.

Here is an article from a local news station.

Here is an article from another local newspaper.

Any help that you could give would be greatly appreciated!

Ralph Brennan's Seafood Cookbook Blog [06 May 2008|04:01pm]
Famous restaurateur Ralph Brennan, owner of Redfish Grill, Bacco, Ralph's on the Park in New Orleans, and Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen at Disneyland, has a Blogspot blog that's been dishing up tasty postings for over a month now.

The blog is pulling content from the newly-published "Ralph Brennan's New Orleans Seafood Cookbook," co-written by food critic Gene Bourg. A long-time restaurant critic for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Bourg adds historical flavor to the recipes in the book.

The blog is publishing on a daily basis and includes the mouthwatering photography of Kerri McCaffety, the "color photography Queen of New Orleans."

The blog posts delve into the culinary culture of the Gulf Coast, including the history of many popular Creole and Cajun dishes. Anyone interested in the perfect preparation of seafood will enjoy the lively writing and breathtaking photos on this blog.

My husband and I have been traveling around La. taking pics and enjoying the beauty of our state. I've been posting them in my personal journal and I noticed that there wasn't any communities for Louisiana pictures. We created a community to share photos of what makes our state great and unique. Post any and all pictures of people, scenery, outings, events and anything that makes up this beautiful state we call home. Come join louisiana_pix and share the beauty in your part of the state.

Thank you for allowing me to post this.

New Community [13 Jul 2006|05:44pm]

I noticed since moving back home, that things are a bit wacky still. And when fasting I noticed how little I could think of doing that didn't involve food.

I've also noticed that I've lost half of my friends because they are scattered all over the country.

So I created borednola!

If you notice an event that looks interesting, post it.
Want someone to hang with, post it.
Thinking of doing something specific, and want to invite new people to join, post it.
Want to do something, but have no way to get to and from, post it.

I'm thinking it might be a great way for us all to meet new people and maybe try out new things.
Parents- Look for like minded parents to hang out with... Since your single friends shy away from hanging out with you and your kids.
Students- tired of being stuck on campus? Find something to do on the other side of town. And new people to do it with. Or find students to attend campus functions with instead of wandering around alone.
Locals- be a tourist for a day and check out the zoo, aquarium or tour with other locals.
Wanna go on a road trip? Find someone to car pool with.

Ya'll get the idea.

Any suggestions for links on the info page or rules, etc. I'd appreciate it. I'm thinking of including links for the local Attractions, the bus system and similar communities... also. Icons, and images to use on the page would be nice.

X-posted everywhere I could think of!

*edit for this community*
I'm posting here as well, because There are things to do all across LA that could be posted, or people from elsewhere might like to make plans before visiting us!

this jackass has pissed me off for so many reasons [29 Jun 2006|02:22pm]

First homosexual marriage is a more important issue than levees, wetland restoration or anything else here in Louisiana, now this:

"Your senator, David Vitter, was the deciding vote AGAINST Internet freedom during a key vote yesterday in the Senate Commerce Committee.

The committee voted 11 to 11 on the Snowe/Dorgan proposal to preserve Net Neutrality—one vote shy of passage. Your senator voted to let companies like AT&T put tollbooths on the Internet and gain more control over what you see and do online. The fight to preserve the free and open Internet now moves to the full Senate.

Please call Sen. Vitter today and say "shame on you" for opposing the Snowe-Dorgan Internet freedom proposal. Tell him to oppose any bill in the full Senate that doesn't protect Net Neutrality. Here is the number:

Senator David Vitter
Phone: 202-224-4623

Senator Vitter took $12,000 in contributions this election cycle from big telecommunications companies, according to www.opensecrets.org, and then sided with them in yesterday's vote.

Senators who voted yesterday had a clear choice between siding with big money or siding with their constitutents. While 1 million everyday people petitioned Congress to save Net Neutrality, big telecommunications companies like AT&T gave nearly 1 million dollars in campaign contributions to members of the Senate Commerce Committee this election cycle. Politicians need to be held accountable for making the wrong choice."

I already called and left a message with one of his peons. It only takes a minute, please take the time to call.

[ mood | drained ]

I'm posting here because there is a Great Dane that really needs your help this weekend.  Anna's owner was being supported financially entirely by her husband, until he died suddenly and unexpectedly.  It was then that she turned to rescue as she realized she could not even afford to feed herself let alone the animals that had come to live with her.  A wonderful rescue in South Carolina has agreed to take Anna in, but we have to get her there.  She is already underweight and being fed half rations - we want to get her to a place where she can be fed regularly as soon as possible.  On her way to rescue she will be traveling through Shreveport and Monroe, LA!

More details here:
(Please feel free to comment here or there with any questions you may have)
(Please cross post)

Please take a look at the link above and see if you can help.  All it takes is a couple hours out of your day and some gas to drive from one city to the next.

Thank you
- Saigh

Employee Free Choice Act petition [09 Dec 2005|06:30pm]

This act would make it easier for employees to unionize if they want. Here are the main parts:
*union recognition by card-check, i.e. when majority of employees sign a union card, the union gets recognition. cuts off the time and bureaucracy of NLRB votes that take months or years
*allows first-contract arbitration if an agreement can't be reached in 90 days
*stronger Penalties for violations while employees are attempting to organize or obtain a first contract

This isn't just about whether or not you like unions. It's about whether or not you believe people have the right to unionize democratically in an efficient, clear process, without threat of firing or other intimidation.

If you believe that, then please spread the word on this.
